Every time I hear the word quagmire, this powerful images dances in my head.

I knew who this was by even before I read it, such a powerful image. yes, perfect choice in regards to the word quagmire.

Yes, the image is very strong. Overlay that with the emotional underpinnings of the painters mental state with which it was made and add on the baggage that the title carries with it and you have a perfect symbol for the word 'quagmire'. I wanted to paint something to represent quagmire - but nothing trumps this - and to paint something to represent the word and what it stands for (if you know what I mean) would be insulting to this lasting impression.
