Quotable

Gerhard Richter, 'Abstraktes Bild', 1988, 200 X 160 cm

"One must believe in what one does, become committed in one's interior in order to paint. Once obsessed with it, you are finally pushed to believe, to a certain extent, that humanity could be changed through painting. If one is free of this passion, however, one can do nothing. The best thing in this case is to give up since, at heart, painting is complete idiocy."

Gerhard Richter, in conversation with Irmeline Lebeer (1977)
